Insulation

Polyurethane spray foam is a widely-used alternative for insulation. It can be applied quickly, even to difficult-to-reach spaces, and can withstand diverse environmental conditions. There are two primary types of foam insulation: closed and open cell.

Closed Cell Insulation

Closed cell insulation is denser and offers extra insulation and higher resistance to moisture. It better withstands extreme temperatures and provides a good support to walls.

Open Cell Insulation

Open cell insulation expands when it is applied and afterwards forms a hermetic seal. For this reason, it can be used to insulate areas that cannot be reached by closed cell insulation. Unlike closed cell insulation, however, open cell spray foam does not withstand moisture, nor does it provide support for walls and it cannot withstand extremely high temperatures.

FAQ

A lot of the answer depends on the climate. If you're going to put foam under the floor, the closed-cell SPF is recommended. The preference is to insulate the walls and make the space much like a basement.
